Your Phone Got Wet — Do This, Not the Rice Thing

Rice does not dry a phone. It is the most repeated bad advice in tech. Here is what actually happens inside a wet phone, and the first ten minutes that decide whether it survives.

There is a good chance you already know what people will tell you: put it in rice. It is the most widely repeated piece of technology advice in existence, and it does not work.

Worse, following it wastes the only window in which your phone could actually be saved.

The short answer

Do not turn it on. If it is on, power it down. Dry the outside, keep it upright with the ports facing down, and leave it somewhere with moving air for at least 48 hours. Do not use rice, do not use heat, and do not charge it. Water alone rarely kills a phone — electricity flowing through water does.

The first ten minutes

In order, and speed genuinely matters:

  1. Get it out of the water.
  2. Power it off immediately. If it is already off, leave it off. Do not press anything to "check".
  3. Take off the case and remove the SIM tray — that opens a drainage path.
  4. Dry the outside with a soft cloth. Do not rub the ports.
  5. Hold it with the ports facing down and shake gently to let water run out rather than in.
  6. Leave it upright in moving air — a room with a fan is ideal. Not a windowsill in the sun.
  7. Wait at least 48 hours before even thinking about power.

That waiting period is the hardest part and the most important. Almost every phone that dies from water damage dies because someone turned it on too early.

Why rice does not work

The idea sounds plausible: rice absorbs moisture, so it should pull water out of a phone. Two things are wrong with it.

Rice absorbs moisture from air, very slowly. It has no mechanism to draw water out of a sealed metal-and-glass enclosure. Open air with a fan moves more moisture in an hour than rice does in a day.

It costs you time. While the phone sits buried and everyone feels productive, water is sitting on the circuit board doing the actual damage — which is not the water itself but the corrosion it starts.

And it adds a problem: rice dust and starch get into the charging port and speaker mesh, where they set into a paste that traps moisture rather than removing it.

The one rule that matters most

A wet phone that stays off usually survives. A wet phone that gets switched on usually does not. Water conducts electricity — powering up a wet board sends current down paths it was never meant to take, and shorts components that were otherwise fine.

What actually kills the phone

Understanding this makes the advice above make sense.

Short circuits. Water bridges connections that should be separate. With power flowing, that bridge destroys components in an instant. With no power, nothing happens.

Corrosion. This is the slower killer. Water that is not pure — and none of it is — leaves minerals behind as it evaporates. Those deposits keep conducting and keep corroding long after the phone feels dry. This is why a phone can work fine for a week and then fail.

Which is why what kind of water matters:

If it went into sea water or a sugary drink, a rinse in clean fresh water while the phone is off is genuinely better than leaving the residue in place. That feels wrong and is not.

What not to do

  • Do not turn it on. Repeated because it is the one that matters.
  • Do not charge it. Putting power into a wet port is the fastest way to destroy the board, and it can damage the charger too.
  • Do not use a hairdryer on heat. Heat warps adhesive, stresses the battery and drives moisture deeper.
  • Do not put it on a radiator or in an oven. Same problem, worse.
  • Do not shake it hard. You move water from a place it might have drained out of to a place it will not.
  • Do not use compressed air. It forces water further in.
  • Do not poke cotton buds into ports. You push water and fibres inward.

About water resistance ratings

If your phone is rated IP67 or IP68, your odds are good. But those ratings deserve context:

  • They are tested in a lab with clean fresh water, at a set depth, for a set time.
  • They do not cover salt water, soap, chlorine or pressure — a swimming pool and the sea are both harsher than the test.
  • Seals age. Every drop, every temperature swing, every repair degrades them. A three-year-old phone does not perform like the day it was tested.
  • Water damage is usually excluded from warranty regardless of the rating, and most phones contain a small indicator sticker that turns red permanently.

Treat the rating as insurance against accidents, not permission to swim with it.

After the wait

At the 48-hour mark:

  1. Check the ports with a light for any visible moisture. If there is any, wait longer.
  2. Turn it on. If it boots, work through the speaker, microphone, camera, both front and back, and each port.
  3. Watch it for a week. Corrosion damage often shows up late — random restarts, a port that stops charging, a camera that fogs.
  4. Back it up straight away if it works. Whatever damage started may still be progressing.

If it does not turn on, a repair shop can still open it and clean the board with isopropyl alcohol — which does work, because it displaces water and evaporates without residue. That is worth doing sooner rather than later, since corrosion continues either way.

The summary

Off, drained, upright, moving air, 48 hours. No rice, no heat, no charging.

The instinct to check whether it still works is exactly the instinct that breaks it.

Water trapped in the speaker mesh. It usually clears in a day or two. Playing a low-frequency tone can help push it out. If it persists past a few days, moisture is still inside.
